School Closings & Delayed Openings – Weather Procedures

Weather-Related Announcements

In the event of snow or other hazardous weather conditions, Teaneck Public Schools may announce a Delayed Opening or School Closings.

All announcements will be made by 6:30 AM through the following channels:

  • Radio Stations: WCBS (880 AM) and WINS (1010 AM)

  • TV Stations: CBS (Channel 2), NBC (4), FOX (5), ABC (7), News12 (Cablevision), and FiOS 1 News

  • District Website: www.teaneckschools.org

  • District Social Media Platforms: Instagram and Facebook

  • Automated calls, texts, and email notifications (make sure your contact info is updated in the Parent Portal)

Scheduling Procedures on School Closings

To ensure consistency across the district, Teaneck Public Schools follows the procedure depending on the grade level. It is important that staff members, especially those who travel between schools, are aware of the distinctions.

All Schools (Grades K–12)

In the event of school closings, the district treats the day as if school was in session. This means the letter-day rotation advances as if the snow day occurred.

  • Example – All Schools

    • Day before snow day: A Day

    • Snow day: would have been B Day

    • Day after snow day: A Day (High School) or C Day (Elementary School and Middle School) 

Reminder

Staff should plan accordingly and communicate with their building administrators if they work across multiple schools or schedules.

Early Dismissal

In rare cases when a decision is reached to dismiss school early due to severe weather, power failure or other emergency, the administration will make every attempt to communicate with the parents of the students affected.

Transportation will be provided for children who ordinarily are bused.

If school is OPEN and it starts to snow and you want to pick up your child, please be there 20 minutes before dismissal.

Extension of the school Day

There may be an emergency condition, such as severe weather, that arises at the end of the school day that requires keeping children in the building to ensure their safety. If such an emergency occurs, children will be kept until their dismissal is deemed safe. Parents may call the school at any time. Bus routes will operate as close to the regular schedule as possible.
