The 5h and 7th grade BFMS Upstanders will meet with their School Counselor and BFMS Anti-Bullying Specialist, Ms. Eve Klein, on a bi-weekly basis during recess time. 6th and 8th grade Upstanders will meet with their School Counselor, Mr. Michael Smith.
Group goals are to reduce harassment, intimidation, and bullying (H.I.B.) in BFMS by trying to establish a culture where bullying is not tolerated by staff or students. This leadership group participates in poster campaigns, group discussions, role plays and utilizes media to become experts on the topics of bullying and relational aggression in middle school. We emphasize the power of students being “upstanders” by standing up and speaking up when they or their peers are being bullied, both online and offline. Members also create projects using various forms of technology and student presentations to present at an annual Upstanders Assembly.
The 7th and 8th graders will serve as school ambassadors and role models for the BFMS community at large, as they help foster acceptable social norms in our school. Students are planning on traveling to elementary schools to share their messages about respect and the value of reporting. Seventh grade Upstanders will be working on an interactive Upstanders blog. Upstanders promote positive behavior, and work toward helping all students feel as safe as possible in our school.
