N.B.A. (No Boys Allowed) book club
N.B.A. is a book club for girls in grades 5 and 6 at Benjamin Franklin Middle School. N.B.A. uses the joy of reading to motivate thoughtful discussion on issues of importance to girls, while increasing self-esteem and self-empowerment. N.B.A. meets bimonthly (Wednesdays) during lunch/recess from October 2014 through May 2015. The girls read books that are pre-selected based upon their themes and the interests of the girls enrolled. Some possible themes include: girl empowerment, friendships, conflict resolution, body image, dating relationships, acceptance and self-esteem.
In order to offset the costs of the book club, there is a $20 fee charged per girl. The book club also participates in fundraisers to cover the costs of special events/activities. It is anticipated that the girls will read approximately 4 -5 books, participate in a community service activity and will host a tea party and/or book signing event.
N.B.A. is facilitated by Ms. Powell (Behaviorist) and Ms. Williams (Reading Specialist). For additional information, contact Ms. Powell (201-833-5457 or
[email protected]
) or Ms. Williams (
