Thursday Tidbits

Thursday, January 27th

Good afternoon Hawthorne Families,

We have almost made our way through the first month of this new year. I am excited about the events which will be taking place in February. We will be hosting virtual family math night, which I hope that you can attend. The purpose of this event is to support math education at home.  I appreciate the responses I received in the recent survey about math night topics. Also, we will be hosting a LITeracy Day during which time we will be celebrating black history, black authors, and black characters.  Feel free to have your child wear pajamas on that day. We will be honoring black history in our classrooms in a variety of ways, so please stay tuned for more information. Please see our February calendar for more information about all of the wonderful things which are happening in February:  February Calendar 2022 (updated).pdf.

Our students will be taking the Star Assessment in February. Please recall that our students took the initial Star Assessment in November. I have attached the letter which was distributed in November for your reference: Parent Star Assessment Letter (2).pdf . Please note that Star Assessment testing accommodations for students who receive special services differ from the accommodations which are provided on standardized assessments such as the NJSLA. Please contact your child's case manager or classroom teacher, should you have any questions.

Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences are on Thursday, February 24th. Parents/guardians may sign up for conference meetings via the portal next week. I will send a separate email with more information.

The PTA will be selling healthy snacks tomorrow at school. Please support our PTA.

If you have not read Dr. Irving's update from yesterday, I encourage you to do so.

Have a great weekend and stay safe,

Thursday, September 30th

Good afternoon Hawthorne Families,

I hope that everyone is doing well.  I want to ask for your assistance with ensuring that our children come to school with well-fitted kid masks.  Thank you for your help to support the health and safety of everyone.

I want to provide information regarding when a student is eligible to receive virtual instruction and what the virtual model entails.  Students are eligible to receive virtual learning if: (1) their parent/guardian has been informed by Nurse Urevitch that they can not return to school without a negative PCR test due to illness, (2) the student is designated as a direct contact of someone who has tested positive with Covid and the district informs the parent/guardian that the student must quarantine, (3) the student has tested positive for Covid.  Students who travel outside of the tri-state area must quarantine upon return but will not be eligible for virtual learning.

Please be reminded that Monday, October 4th and Wednesday, October 6th are early release days.  Dismissal will be at 12:30pm on both days.  Back to School Night will be on Wednesday, October 6th at 6:30pm.  I will be providing a zoom link next week for families to log in prior to visiting your child's google classroom.

Please see the October calendar attached: October 2021 Calendar (2) (1).pdf. Please note that next week is the Week of Respect.  We encourage you to have your child participate by wearing the theme color or style for the respective days.

Our PTA meeting will be virtual and held on October 7th at 7pm: PTA meeting - save the date.png . The zoom link will be emailed next week.  Please join us to learn about all of the wonderful things the PTA has in store.

One of those wonderful things is the Drive Through Trunk-or-Treat which will take place on Thursday, October 28th. Please see the attached flyer for more details:  Trunk OR Treat.jpg

Thursday, September 24th

Good morning Hawthorne Families,

I would be remiss if I did not note that since last week's Thursday Tidbits, our school community has experienced class quarantines. We, the staff at Hawthorne School, take the health and well being of every student and staff member in our building very seriously.  I want to take a moment to discuss and clarify any misinformation.   It has been alleged that our classes are intermingling at recess and consequently, this could have led to covid exposure.  Please note that all classes have an opportunity to play in separate (designated) areas during recess.  While there are circumstances when two classes can be in the gym due to inclement weather, the classes are kept separated.  Students are permitted to remove their masks, while playing outdoors, to allow for fresh air.  Classes are cohorted for lunch and seated at assigned tables with desk shields for each student. To date, no student to student transmission of covid has occurred in Hawthorne School. My staff and I will continue to follow appropriate practices to keep ourselves, our students, and by extension, our families safe.  Thank you for allowing Hawthorne School the privilege of educating your child(ren), particularly during this time.

I also want to inform you of a change relative to the guidelines for siblings of students who have come into direct contact with a person with covid.  Siblings will no longer need to quarantine unless they are the sibling of someone who has tested positive for covid.

There will also be updated information shared next week regarding virtual learning for students who are quarantined and need to submit a negative PCR test to return to school.

The Hawthorne PTA invites you to attend the first virtual PTA meeting on October 7th from 7pm to 8pm.  Please see the flyer attached:  PTA meeting - save the date.png

Our back to school night is on October 6th at 6:30pm.  This event will be virtual.  More information will be forthcoming.

As always, please contact me or any of my staff if you have questions or comments.
